Steve Silk Hurley interviewed by Lenny Fontana for True House Stories® # 109

Steve Silk Hurley also known as J. M. Silk (for “Jack Master Silk”), is an American club DJ, house music producer, and songwriter. From 1985 to 1988, he had four top-10 singles on the US Dance chart, including the number-one hit “I Can’t Turn Around”, all released in collaboration with Keith Nunnally as J. M. Silk. With “Jack Your Body” (number 25 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play),

he topped the UK Singles Chart in January 1987 as a solo artist, while one of his later compositions, “Work It Out” from 1989, brought him his fifth top-10 record on the US Dance chart (at number three). To date, Hurley’s last charting single is “The Word Is Love (Say the Word)”, also known as “Silk’s Anthem of Life” by The Voices of Life, which peaked at number 26 in 1997 in the UK.

He is a four-time Grammy Award nominee; two times as Remixer of the Year, Non-Classical (in 1999 and 2000), and twice for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical (in 2002 and 2003). Come listen to a real life legend share his life in the music industry.

Producer/remixer/songwriter/DJ Steve “Silk” Hurley helped Pioneer Chicago’s House Music with “Jack Your Body,” and has garnered 4 GRAMMY® Nominations thus far. His client list includes Michael Jackson, Prince, CeCe Peniston, Madonna, Janet, and J-Lo.
Truly a maestro of music, Chicago-based producer/remixer/songwriter/DJ Steve “Silk” Hurley of S&S Chicago is a 4-time GRAMMY® Nominee and a Pioneer of Chicago’s House Music genre.
His mix shows have been syndicated on 128 stations in the U.S., to 8 million listeners a week. In addition to writing and producing the House Music classic, “Jack Your Body,” (#1 on the U.K. National Chart for multiple weeks), Silk” has written, remixed and/or produced over 400 records, including chart-topping gold and platinum songs for Michael Jackson, Prince, Crystal Waters, Madonna, Yolanda Adams, CeCe Peniston, Boyz II Men, Janet Jackson, Chaka Khan, Madonna, Inner City, Jennifer Lopez, Ann Nesby, Rahsaan Patterson, Donell Jones and Byron Stingily of Ten City.
His milk is a pioneer of the modern-day remix, being named as the first producer to incorporate the new style of remixing that exists today, in which a totally new composition is created over an Accapella. Many of Silk’s remix projects stem from original versions which are not in the dance genre at all, but his house remixes still manage to reach the #1 position on the dance charts, and sometimes even become crossover radio hits. With hundreds of remixes under his belt, Silk’s influence on the evolution of the remix has helped expand the worldwide reach of House Music.
